- Reference environment
- n8n 2.39.9 · SQLite
- What the tool checks
- Workflow exports and meaningful differences
- What you still verify
- Credentials, execution and your backup scope
Tested 2026-09-21: n8n 2.39.9, Node.js 24.21.0, Linux, SQLite and synthetic data. One inactive two-node workflow, one encrypted dummy credential and a local HTTP endpoint; a stopped data-folder copy into a separate same-version instance. PostgreSQL, Docker volume recovery, queue mode, external providers and arbitrary n8n upgrades are outside this test.
A backup is the start. A recovery drill is the next step.
This kit helps operators of self-hosted n8n inspect workflow exports, compare exports from an isolated restore and collect evidence before an upgrade. It combines a local Python tool with a hands-on recovery workbook.
Inside the download
- Offline workflow inspection: export structure, workflow identity and credential reference checks.
- Before-and-after comparison of workflow nodes, connections and credential references.
- Synthetic sample exports and automated tests you can run before inspecting your own files.
- A backup scope checklist covering the database, encryption key, binary data, custom nodes and version inventory.
- An isolated restore drill, upgrade rollback checklist and editable evidence log.
How to use it
- Run the bundled examples with Python 3.10 or newer.
- Inspect a local copy of your workflow export.
- Follow the workbook to perform a controlled restore into your own isolated test environment.
- Compare exports and record the remaining manual checks before approving an upgrade.
Requirements and scope
For operators comfortable with self-hosted n8n, command-line tools and their existing database backup process. The Python tool uses only the standard library and works locally without API keys or network calls. Documentation is in English.
This is a workflow export inspection and recovery planning kit. It does not create database backups, decrypt credentials, perform restores or certify that a backup will recover. Matching exports do not establish credential usability, complete binary data or successful workflow execution. The shipped package includes synthetic fixture tests. A separate recorded lab subsequently exercised the unchanged checker against real n8n 2.39.9 exports and a same-version SQLite restore. Read the recorded test scope; the checker itself does not perform or certify a restore.
